Welcome to 2024! (What's the theme again?)

It’s a new year! Wow, I can't believe it’s 2024 already. It doesn’t feel like a real year, but at the same time I’ve already adjusted to the fact that it’s not 2023. I haven’t even messed up writing the year down on a piece of paper yet.

Interesting.

The beginning of a new year is always so daunting - it feels like now (and only right now) is the time to do all of your New Year’s Eve resolutions. You have to go to the gym, start that new hobby, move to that city - all right now.

The worst part about it is if you don’t start these things right away, you feel defeated and you feel like a big failure, to where you just don’t want to even try (until next year).

It’s as if you don’t completely become a new person by midnight on January 1st, you’ve lost.

January can also be a time of the year that can be a little daunting. The holidays are over and you’ve probably returned back to work, school, or just back to your regularly scheduled weekend routine.

It’s almost as if you can’t even escape the fact that you’ve gotta start these resolutions now - it’s like a constant alarm going off in your head!

Don’t even get me started on social media - the number of Tik Toks I’ve seen telling me exactly how to approach this year already makes me feel like I’m not doing enough.

It’s so easy to put expectations on yourself ahead of each new year that feel unattainable in a certain timeframe or just expectations you may not have fully prepared for.

For example, you want to go to the gym this year. Great!

But maybe you haven’t thought about it specifically. What do you want to get out of going to the gym?

Do you wanna lose weight, gain muscle, maintain, or to simply just have something new to do during the week?

What are your options in terms of gyms you can join? What’s the membership options? Once you join, how many days do you want to commit to each week or month?

Let's say you want to travel more. Where to? What are your goals with traveling? Do you want to try new restaurants, visit more historical sites, party around the world?

The part about making New Year’s resolutions that people generally seem to miss are the specifics. If you make a goal, but don’t break them up into smaller goals or steps on how you approach achieving it, it can be a bit daunting.

A good way to resolve these issues is to create monthly or even weekly goals that are easier to reach and a bit less scary looking overall.

Also, news flash,  you don’t have to be the new and improved you today, tomorrow, or even six months from now.

Each new day is a gift to go after what you want, but that doesn’t mean you only have one day to do it all.

If you want to accomplish something by the end of the year, you’ve got ~360 days to do it. Slow down, plan, take your time if you can. You will accomplish everything that is meant to be for you this year, trust that!

In the meantime, some of you may feel that you have to be in a certain place in life in order to receive love, to receive blessings, to earn the life you want. I’m here to tell you that that is simply not the case.

You are more than enough as you are right now, and you don’t have to have to wait to have your dream life to start living it. You deserve all the flowers right now, and as you work on yourself, trust that there will only be more bouquets to come.

Make goals, be specific with them, and tackle them little by little throughout the year. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Don’t be afraid to have some of your goals from last year make it into this year.

It’s never too late to start making goals and resolutions for yourself. Make that vision board, get that journal, and get to planning if that is what you desire!

So, what’s the theme for this year? Being.

Be patient with yourself, be kind to yourself, be loving towards yourself, and be forgiving towards yourself. The best thing you can do in 2024 is to be you and authentically you, this year and beyond. Someone’s gotta do it!
